Britain Restores Full Ties with Syria as Foreign Minister Visits Damascus

The United Kingdom has formally restored diplomatic relations with Syria, marking a significant shift in foreign policy following the end of Bashar al-Assad’s 13-year rule. This development was solidified during British Foreign Secretary David Lammy’s visit to Damascus, the first by a UK minister since 2011.

Lammy’s discussions with Syrian interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa and Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani focused on bilateral cooperation and regional stability. The UK pledged £94.5 million ($129 million) in aid to support Syria’s humanitarian needs and long-term reconstruction efforts. This assistance aims to bolster education, economic development, and the dismantling of chemical weapons stockpiles.

The UK has also eased sanctions imposed during Assad’s tenure, lifting restrictions on Syria’s interior and defense ministries, as well as various media outlets. However, sanctions targeting Assad and his close associates remain in place to ensure accountability for past actions.

Syria’s new leadership, under President al-Sharaa, has initiated reforms to stabilize the economy and reintegrate the country into the international community. Efforts include rejoining global financial systems and attracting foreign investment. The UK views a stable Syria as beneficial for reducing irregular migration, combating terrorism, and promoting regional security.
