Bitar questions ex-PM Hassan Diab over Beirut port blast

Former Lebanese Prime Minister Hassan Diab appeared before Judge Tarek Bitar on Friday for questioning related to the devastating Beirut port explosion of August 4, 2020. Diab’s decision to participate followed a meeting with Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul Latif Daryan, who reportedly advised him to cooperate with the investigation to avoid allegations of obstruction.

Renewed Momentum in the Port Blast Investigation

The inquiry into the explosion, which claimed over 220 lives and injured thousands, had been stalled for two years due to political interference and legal challenges. Judge Bitar resumed the investigation in January 2025, charging ten individuals, including security and military officials. Earlier this month, former General Security chief Abbas Ibrahim and former State Security head Tony Saliba were also questioned, marking significant progress in the probe.

The investigation’s revival coincides with a shift in Lebanon’s political landscape, including the election of President Joseph Aoun and the appointment of Prime Minister Nawaf Salam. Both leaders have pledged to uphold judicial independence and support the ongoing investigation.

International Collaboration and Ongoing Efforts

In addition to domestic efforts, international interest in the case remains high. Two French judges are expected to visit Beirut later this month to meet with Judge Bitar and share findings from France’s separate investigation into the blast, which affected French nationals. Countries such as Germany, the Netherlands, and Australia have also requested updates on the investigation, reflecting the global impact of the tragedy.
