U.S. President Joe Biden has criticized Israel’s intense military actions in the Gaza Strip following the October 7 attacks by Hamas, describing them as excessive and calling for an immediate halt. During a press conference at the White House, Biden expressed his concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, highlighting the suffering and death of innocent people due to the ongoing conflict. He emphasized the urgent need for humanitarian aid in the region.
The continuous support of the U.S. for Israel’s offensive against Hamas has led to attacks on American troops and drawn criticism towards the Biden administration both domestically and internationally. The conflict has significantly worsened the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
Biden mentioned his efforts to facilitate humanitarian assistance, including persuading Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to allow the passage of aid into Gaza and coordinating with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to do the same.
The conflict, initiated by Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7, has resulted in numerous casualties. According to official Israeli figures and an AFP tally, the initial attack allegedly killed about 1,160 people, primarily civilians. In response, Israel’s military campaign aimed at dismantling Hamas has led to the death of at least 27,840 people, mostly comprising women and children, as reported by the Gaza health ministry. Additionally, around 250 hostages were taken during the conflict, with 132 still in Gaza and 29 believed to have perished.
The war has also triggered increased regional violence, with Iran-backed groups launching attacks in support of Hamas, leading to retaliatory actions by Israel, the United States, and their allies.
