Biden praises Microsoft’s success on former Foxconn flop site.
U.S. President Joe Biden recently criticized Donald Trump for his unfulfilled promise to bring substantial job growth to southeastern Wisconsin through a $10 billion investment by Foxconn that never materialized. Instead, Biden highlighted new economic ventures under his administration, such as a Microsoft data center set to be established in the same location.
This new venture in the key battleground state is credited to the Biden administration’s economic strategies, according to Microsoft President Brad Smith. The project, which marks a clear distinction between Biden’s and Trump’s administration outcomes, is expected to employ approximately 2,300 union workers for its construction and subsequently provide 2,000 permanent jobs.
During his speech in Sturtevant, Racine County, Biden recounted the previous administration’s high hopes symbolized by a golden shovel ceremony with Senator Ron Johnson, which he mocked for failing spectacularly. He emphasized the real costs of the failed project, including the destruction of 100 homes and the waste of hundreds of millions of dollars, labeling the Foxconn endeavor as nothing more than a “con.”
On the other hand, Trump’s representatives refrained from commenting on the Foxconn issue but pointed out that the economic conditions were better under his presidency. The Republican National Committee argued that Biden’s policies have led to economic downturns, citing stalling manufacturing and increasing costs of living, making Biden unpopular in Wisconsin and other pivotal states.
Meanwhile, Foxconn maintains that its operations in Wisconsin are significant, claiming a substantial investment in the state and providing jobs for over 1,000 people.
Local Republican U.S. Representative Bryan Steil acknowledged the positive impact of the Microsoft announcement for local workers but accused Biden of using it to overshadow his administration’s struggles with inflation and taking undue credit for initiatives started before his term.
On the day of Biden’s visit, Trump was in Florida, engaging with supporters who purchased digital trading card NFTs featuring him in various heroic guises, as part of a promotional event.
Biden also engaged with the African-American community in Racine, reflecting on his political roots and discussing the democratic stakes of the upcoming election. He claimed that the race in Wisconsin, historically decided by a narrow margin, would be critical.
Additionally, Biden’s campaign has intensified its outreach to minority voters, initiating a significant ad campaign focusing on healthcare issues and Trump’s attempts to overturn the Affordable Care Act.
This effort is part of a broader strategy to secure votes in crucial states, with Biden’s reelection campaign setting up numerous offices and staffing extensively in traditionally less-targeted areas by Democrats.
While the new Microsoft data center promises significant economic benefits, it highlights the shift toward high-tech, AI-driven industries, which may offer limited direct employment opportunities once operational.
