The pro-Hezbollah Al-Akhbar newspaper reported on Friday that “serious discussions have resumed” between Speaker Nabih Berri and U.S. officials regarding the proposed agreement, although the talks have not yet reached the final stages as claimed by Israeli sources.
According to informed sources, unresolved issues include the establishment of an international committee to oversee the implementation of Resolution 1701 in its entirety. This committee would likely include representatives from the U.S., the UK, France, and potentially Jordan.
Diplomatic sources revealed to Al-Akhbar that discussions over a new pacification framework for Gaza and Lebanon, based on a U.S. proposal, have been ongoing between Egyptian and U.S. officials over the past two days. Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty reportedly addressed specific aspects of this proposal during his visit to Beirut, where he engaged with various stakeholders.
Separately, an Egyptian official informed Al-Akhbar that Israel’s recent airstrikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs might reflect an effort by Tel Aviv to eliminate what it perceives as the remaining Hezbollah positions in the area.
