Lebanon’s Parliament Speaker, Nabih Berri, has recently reinforced Lebanon’s dedication to Resolution 1701 and its full implementation. However, he expressed disappointment in a discussion with al-Joumhouria newspaper, published Thursday, about Israel’s numerous violations of this resolution.
Berri firmly stated that Lebanon would not accept any changes to the resolution. He emphasized, “Conditions, amendments, or new arrangements imposed on Lebanon regarding this resolution will be unequivocally rejected and opposed.”
He further insisted that the only requirement is the enforcement of the resolution as it stands. Berri clarified Lebanon’s position on border issues, noting, “Our stance is clear and definitive: the international border is established and identifiable. Among the 13 border points, some have been resolved, while others, including those at Shebaa Farms, Kfarshouba Hills, the northern area of al-Mari, and the B1 point, still require resolution.”
Regarding the army chief’s role, Berri revealed that his direct involvement would commence from December 1. He also announced plans to call a legislative session before December 15.
Additionally, Berri urged the election of a new president at the earliest, attributing the extended delay to disagreements within the Maronite community, notably between the Free Patriotic Movement and the Lebanese Forces.
