Germany has begun the evacuation of approximately two dozen of its nationals from the Gaza Strip as the conflict in the region continues to escalate. The operation is being conducted in coordination with Israeli authorities, according to a statement delivered by German Foreign Ministry spokesperson Christian Wagner during a press briefing on Wednesday.
Wagner noted that about 24 German citizens are currently being extracted from Gaza. In addition to those being evacuated, a few others—described as a small, single-digit number—remain in the enclave and have also expressed a desire to leave.
Earlier this month, German officials had already facilitated the evacuation of 19 nationals along with 14 of their relatives. The ongoing efforts reflect the growing danger in Gaza following the collapse of a ceasefire agreement originally brokered on January 19.
Since the breakdown of the truce two months later, Israeli forces have resumed widespread air and ground operations across the region, leading to massive displacement. Reports indicate that hundreds of thousands have been forced to flee their homes amid intensifying violence.
In a statement made Wednesday, Israel’s Defense Minister Israel Katz reaffirmed that humanitarian aid into Gaza would remain blocked, further worsening the conditions for civilians trapped in the conflict zone.
