Bassil proposes UN resolution to halt Israel-Hezbollah clash

Jebran Bassil, the leader of the Free Patriotic Movement, has addressed a letter to key international and national figures, including the ambassadors of U.N. Security Council member states, UNIFIL countries, the members of the five-nation group for Lebanon, the Vatican, the EU ambassador, the U.N. special coordinator for Lebanon, Speaker Nabih Berri, caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati, and caretaker Foreign Minister Abdallah Bou Habib.

In his letter, Bassil urgently requests the immediate enforcement of U.N. Security Council Resolution 1701 in its entirety. He advocates for a global stance at international forums to denounce the ongoing Israeli transgressions. Bassil expressed concerns about the aggressive actions of Israel in Lebanon potentially leading to a devastating conflict akin to the current war in Gaza.

He emphasized the necessity of separating the situation in southern Lebanon from the Gaza conflict and suggested that the international community could thwart Israeli agendas by adopting a new U.N. Security Council resolution that reinforces the principles established in Resolution 1701.

Furthermore, Bassil highlighted the critical domestic priorities of respecting Lebanon’s constitution and revitalizing its national institutions, which include electing a president to lead these bodies and implementing essential social and economic reforms.
