Euro 2024: Axe-wielding man shot by German police before Poland vs. Netherlands match

German police shot an axe-wielding man in Hamburg just hours before the Euro 2024 match between the Netherlands and Poland.

The incident occurred in the Reeperbahn district, a popular entertainment area in Hamburg’s city center. A police officer was initially attacked by the man, prompting a swift response from security agencies. The area, where nearly 40,000 Dutch fans had gathered, was cleared around 12:30 p.m. CET (6:30 a.m. ET) before the police shot the attacker.

Authorities reported that the man was also carrying an incendiary device, possibly a Molotov cocktail. According to media reports, police initially used pepper spray on the attacker before resorting to firearms.

“In St Pauli, there is currently a major police operation. According to initial findings, a person threatened police officers with a pickaxe and an incendiary device,” stated the Hamburg Police. “The police then used their firearms. The attacker was injured and is currently receiving medical treatment.”

The attacker’s motive remains unclear, but early reports suggest it was not related to football. Video clips of the incident circulating on social media show the attacker charging at officials, who provided several opportunities for him to surrender before using their firearm.
