Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, recently hinted at the introduction of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) into Apple’s product lineup. This move is seen as an effort to catch up with rivals like Google and Samsung, who have already integrated generative AI features into their smartphones.
During Apple’s quarterly earnings call on Thursday, Cook discussed the company’s AI initiatives, revealing plans to roll out generative AI software features to customers later this year. “We’re spending a tremendous amount of time and effort on artificial intelligence,” Cook stated, as reported by The Verge. However, he did not disclose specific details about these AI developments.
Apple’s push into AI technology, particularly with iOS 18, is anticipated to be one of its most significant updates. This includes integrating AI across its operating system, as evidenced by references to a large language model codenamed Ajax and other technologies like ChatGPT found in iOS 17.4 code.
Industry experts believe that Apple will focus on enhancing Siri, its voice assistant, using generative AI large language models (LLMs) for a more sophisticated Siri 2.0. The company also plans to infuse AI features throughout the iPhone operating system, such as smart replies in Messages, playlist suggestions in Apple Music, and other areas.
While Cook did not specifically mention the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June, the timing of his “later this year” comment aligns with the event, hinting at a possible unveiling of Apple’s AI products then.
Generative AI, or Gen AI, refers to AI systems capable of creating new content, such as text, images, or music. These models are trained on extensive datasets to recognize patterns and structures, enabling them to produce original content that mirrors their training data.
