Aoun Monitors South as Salam Calls for End to Israeli Strikes

On Thursday, Israel executed a series of airstrikes in southern Lebanon’s Nabatieh region, marking one of its most extensive military operations since the U.S.-brokered ceasefire in November 2024. According to Lebanese security sources, a total of 14 strikes were carried out, targeting areas purportedly associated with Hezbollah activities. The Israeli military stated that the operation aimed at a strategic underground facility allegedly housing militants, weaponry, and wells.

The Lebanese Health Ministry reported that the strikes resulted in one fatality and eight injuries. This incident adds to a series of confrontations that have persisted despite the ceasefire agreement intended to halt hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah. The November 2024 truce mandated the withdrawal of Hezbollah fighters and the removal of weapons from southern Lebanon, yet tensions have remained high, with both sides accusing each other of violations.

President Joseph Aoun received detailed briefings from Army Commander General Rodolphe Haykal regarding the locations and outcomes of the Israeli strikes. In response to the escalating situation, Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, during a visit to Baalbek, emphasized the urgency of ending Israeli violations and reiterated the government’s commitment to diplomatic efforts aimed at securing Israel’s withdrawal from Lebanese territory.

The Lebanese government has consistently called upon the international community to exert pressure on Israel to adhere to the ceasefire terms and to cease its military operations within Lebanese borders. Despite these appeals, Israeli airstrikes have continued, contributing to the ongoing instability in the region.
