Ruben Amorim Confirms Manchester United Approach, Says ‘Nothing Decided Yet’

Manchester United managerial target Rúben Amorim has acknowledged contact with the club amid their search for Erik ten Hag’s replacement, though he indicated that “nothing is decided yet” regarding his potential appointment. Amorim, who currently manages Sporting Lisbon in Portugal, is seen as a strong candidate for the position following United’s decision to part ways with Ten Hag after a lackluster start to the season.

In an interview with A Bola, Amorim stated, “Nobody knows if this was my farewell match. Nothing is confirmed yet,” suggesting that a move to Manchester United remains uncertain.

At 39, the former Portugal midfielder has emerged as a preferred long-term option for United’s board, who have been impressed by his recent success with Sporting. Under Amorim’s guidance, Sporting Lisbon has claimed two league titles and made a strong showing in the Portuguese FA Cup. Reports suggest United could finalize his arrival in time for their Premier League clash against Chelsea, with compensation for Amorim’s release potentially set at $10 million.

Who is Rúben Amorim?

Currently head coach at Sporting Lisbon, Amorim has a previous connection with Manchester United, having interned at Old Trafford during José Mourinho’s tenure. A former Benfica player, Amorim spent most of his playing career in Portugal before moving into management in 2018. He also represented Portugal on the international stage, earning 14 caps and competing in both the 2010 and 2014 World Cups.

Since taking charge at Sporting, Amorim has led the team to league titles in 2020-21 and 2023-24 and continues to drive their success in the 2024-25 season.
