American Startup Targets Space Innovation with Orbital Fuel Stations

Orbit Fab, an American enterprise, is pioneering an ambitious space project involving orbital fueling stations. This system encompasses fuel ports, refueling shuttles, and orbital tankers, effectively creating โ€œgas stations in space.โ€ However, the cost for on-orbit refueling starts at a steep $20 million.

The company has already made significant strides, including testing and launching a fuel depot demonstrator. A notable mission planned for 2024 involves the Air Force Research Lab. Daniel Faber, Orbit Fabโ€™s CEO, highlighted the projectโ€™s demonstration purpose and the growing interest it has garnered from various U.S. government sectors.

In addition to government interest, Orbit Fab has attracted private clients, such as the Japanese satellite servicing company Astroscale. Astroscaleโ€™s satellite, LEXI, designed for refueling, is set for a 2026 launch.

This development is critical in the context of space sustainability. Space debris, largely consisting of fuel-depleted satellites and vehicles, poses a significant challenge. On-orbit servicing, which includes refueling, is increasingly viewed as vital for maintaining a safe and sustainable space environment.

Stanford Universityโ€™s associate professor of astronautics, Simone Dโ€™Amico, drew parallels between the importance of gas stations and auto repair shops for terrestrial mobility and the necessity of similar infrastructure in space. He emphasized that the proliferation of space assets has reached a critical volume, necessitating a paradigm shift.

Dโ€™Amico, who is not affiliated with Orbit Fab, praised the companyโ€™s visionary approach. He acknowledged the high short-term risks, as satellites need to be designed with reusability and refueling in mind, but sees potential payoffs in the mid to long term.
