Carlos Alcaraz secured a 6-2, 7-5 win over Taylor Fritz, giving Team Europe a 13-11 victory over Team World in the Laver Cup’s final session on Sunday. Alcaraz, a four-time Grand Slam champion, dominated the first set and held off U.S. Open finalist Fritz to seal Team Europe’s fifth Laver Cup title.
“It’s been an incredible experience. We came together as a team to win the Laver Cup, and I’m really happy with the result. It was a tough competition, and we nearly lost,” Alcaraz said after the match.
Team World had taken a strong lead on Saturday after Ben Shelton and Alejandro Tabilo defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas and Casper Ruud, putting them ahead 8-4.
However, Team Europe, led by captain Bjorn Borg, mounted a fierce comeback on the final day. Alcaraz paired with Ruud to defeat Americans Shelton and Frances Tiafoe 6-2, 7-6(6) in an early doubles match, earning three points and narrowing the deficit to 8-7.
Shelton extended Team World’s lead by defeating Daniil Medvedev 6-7(6), 7-5, 10-7, bringing John McEnroe’s squad within reach of a third straight title. But Alexander Zverev reignited Team Europe’s hopes by beating Tiafoe 6-7(5), 7-5, 10-5, setting the stage for a thrilling final.
Alcaraz, the reigning French Open and Wimbledon champion, finished the job in the last session, clinching the title for Team Europe.
Next year’s Laver Cup will take place in San Francisco.
