In a thrilling showdown at the Indian Wells final, reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz from Spain is set to face off against Russia’s fourth seed, Daniil Medvedev, in a highly anticipated rematch of last year’s title match. Both players advanced to the final after winning their respective semi-final matches in dramatic three-set battles on Saturday.
Alcaraz mounted a remarkable comeback to defeat Jannik Sinner with scores of 1-6, 6-3, 6-2, following Medvedev’s narrow victory over American Tommy Paul by 1-6, 7-6(3), 6-2 in the latter semi-final.
Sinner, the Australian Open champion and the season’s standout player, seemed on track to dominate the match when he won the first set. However, a three-hour rain interruption halted his momentum. Alcaraz turned the tide in the second set, breaking Sinner’s serve with a robust forehand that led to a commanding lead and eventually forcing a final set after executing a drop shot Sinner couldn’t challenge.
In the decisive third set, Alcaraz broke Sinner’s serve again, with Sinner struggling after a dive that seemed to affect his left hand. Alcaraz’s relentless pressure and a series of errors from Sinner allowed the Spaniard to secure the match, halting Sinner’s attempt to claim the world number two spot and ending his 19-match winning streak.
Alcaraz emphasized the mental resilience required for his comeback, noting the need for increased defense and persistence on the court.
Medvedev, similarly, staged a comeback against Paul, overcoming a one-sided first set to even the scores. Despite Paul’s efforts to push the second set to a tie-break, Medvedev’s strategic plays enabled him to level the match and eventually dominate the third set, leading to his victory and setting up a chance to redeem his previous year’s final loss to Alcaraz.
Medvedev acknowledged the challenge posed by Paul’s initial performance, stating his need to adjust his game to create difficulties for Paul, especially targeting his serve, which ultimately contributed to his win.
