On Monday, in southern Lebanon, an Israeli airstrike resulted in the death of a local leader, as reported by Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency. The incident took place amid ongoing cross-border fire exchanges, primarily involving the Israeli military and Hezbollah.
The agency identified the deceased as 80-year-old Hussein Mansour, a mukhtar (local official) from the village of Taybeh, near the border. The attack on the village by Israeli forces led to Mansour’s death. The report detailed that a shell struck his house but did not detonate, fatally injuring Mansour. He was reportedly on a balcony with eight other individuals at the time.
Since the onset of the Israel-Hamas war on October 7, the frontier between Lebanon and Israel has been the site of escalating hostilities, predominantly between Israeli forces and Hezbollah. This surge in violence has raised concerns about a potential wider conflict.
As per an AFP report, the conflict has resulted in over 120 fatalities on the Lebanese side since October, with the majority being Hezbollah fighters, but also including 17 civilians. In contrast, Israel has reported the deaths of six soldiers and four civilians in the northern region of the country.
Additionally, the National News Agency noted multiple instances of Israeli shelling and air raids in various areas of southern Lebanon on Monday. In response, Hezbollah has claimed responsibility for numerous attacks on Israeli military personnel and positions near the border.
