UK Deputy Defense Chief Reiterates Support for Lebanese Army

UK Deputy Chief of Defense Staff, Air Marshal Harvey Smyth, recently concluded his inaugural two-day trip to Lebanon aimed at reinforcing UK’s commitment to regional de-escalation efforts, according to a statement from the British Embassy in Beirut on Wednesday.

During his visit, Air Marshal Smyth engaged with several key Lebanese officials including Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati, Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, Lebanese Armed Forces Chief General Joseph Aoun, and Foreign Affairs Minister Abdallah Bou Habib. His discussions underscored the UK’s dedication to supporting the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) in their role of maintaining stability and security amidst national challenges.

The Air Marshal’s journey also took him to Northern Lebanon where he observed the 1st Land Border Regiment’s efforts in securing the nation’s sovereignty. This regiment plays a crucial role in thwarting smuggling and terrorist activities along the expansive 100km border with Syria.

Concluding his visit, Air Marshal Smyth expressed his admiration for the strong partnership between the British and Lebanese Armed Forces, particularly in managing border security. He reaffirmed the UK’s stance on preventing Lebanon from being pulled into broader regional conflicts, and emphasized the UK’s collaborative approach with Lebanon to reduce tensions in the region, including the ongoing strife along the Blue Line and the conflict in Gaza.

The British Ambassador to Lebanon, Hamish Cowell, echoed Smyth’s sentiments, stressing the importance of continued collaboration to avert further escalation in South Lebanon and across the region. He highlighted the UK’s ongoing support for the LAF during these turbulent times and its commitment to fostering peace and long-term stability in partnership with international allies.
