Mikati Applauds UN Ceasefire Call, Calls for End to Israeli Aggression in Lebanon

Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati has welcomed the U.N. Security Council’s demand for an immediate halt to hostilities in Gaza, five months into the ongoing conflict.

Mikati views the resolution as an initial step towards halting Israeli hostilities in the Gaza Strip and has called on the global community to exert pressure on Israel to cease its attacks on southern Lebanon.

Furthermore, he advocated for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict that would ensure the Palestinian people’s rights are recognized and upheld.

Since the outbreak of hostilities in Gaza in October, the Lebanon-Israel border has witnessed almost daily skirmishes, with international intermediaries working tirelessly to avert a full-scale conflict in Lebanon.

The applicability of a Gaza ceasefire to Lebanon remains uncertain.

While Hezbollah has committed to adhering to any ceasefire agreement in Gaza, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant warned on Monday that the absence of a clear victory in Gaza could potentially escalate the situation, leading Israel closer to a conflict in the north.
