Spanish football giants Atlético Madrid have confirmed that they have reached a deal with Brazilian club Botafogo for the transfer of Argentine midfielder Thiago Almada. The move is subject to a medical examination and the completion of final contract formalities, according to the announcement made on Tuesday via the club’s official social media channels.
A Rising Star Joins La Liga
Almada, 24, brings with him a growing international reputation, having been part of Argentina’s World Cup-winning squad in Qatar in 2022. A creative and technically gifted attacking midfielder, Almada most recently featured on loan for French club Olympique Lyonnais during the second half of the 2023–24 season.
While at Lyon, he made 20 appearances across all competitions, scoring twice and contributing five assists—showcasing his ability to influence the game both in buildup and final-third play.
In addition to his senior national team experience, Almada represented Argentina at the 2024 Paris Olympics, further cementing his role as one of the country’s most promising young talents.
From Velez to Europe: Almada’s Career So Far
Almada began his professional career with Argentine side Vélez Sarsfield, debuting at just 17 years old in 2018. His performances quickly attracted international attention, leading to a move to Major League Soccer’s Atlanta United in 2022.
His first season in MLS was a breakout campaign—he was named the league’s best newcomer and became one of the most dynamic players in North America’s top division. That form paved the way for a transfer to Brazilian club Botafogo in the summer of 2023.
At Botafogo, Almada played a key role during a historic campaign, helping the Rio de Janeiro-based club secure both the Brasileirão title and the Copa Libertadores. In total, he made 26 appearances before being loaned out to Lyon in January 2024 to gain European experience.
What Almada Brings to Atlético
Almada’s profile fits well with Atlético Madrid’s growing desire to integrate more technically gifted and attack-minded players into their system. Known for his quick feet, vision, and long-range shooting ability, Almada is expected to add depth and flair to Atlético’s midfield options.
Pending the results of his medical and contract signing, Almada will join the Spanish capital club ahead of the 2024–25 season. His arrival is likely to offer manager Diego Simeone additional tactical flexibility, as Atlético look to challenge on both domestic and European fronts.
