Sources reported a constructive dialogue during the meeting between Speaker Nabih Berri and U.S. mediator Amos Hochstein on Monday, creating a hopeful environment for peace.
The discussions, as per Annahar newspaper, highlighted several positive developments that, if actualized, could cease the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in the South. It was noted that Hochstein did not present a formal document of his proposals but instead suggested both old and new strategies aimed at ending military operations. These strategies include the return of displaced individuals to their homes across the border and stopping military actions south of the Litani River, setting the stage for a broader agreement concerning the border area stretching from the B1 point to the Shebaa Farms.
As reported by ad-Diyar newspaper, Hochstein conveyed to Berri that following a ceasefire in Gaza, he would revisit Lebanon to work on implementing Resolution 1701. Furthermore, Al-Akhbar newspaper disclosed that Hochstein’s plans also encompass an economic aid program for the southern regions and assurances for resuming oil and gas exploration by international firms.
Officials who interacted with Hochstein were quoted saying that the U.S. is keen on establishing a framework to avert any escalation leading to significant hostilities on the Lebanese front.
While Nidaa al-Watan newspaper mentioned Hezbollah’s stance via Berri, emphasizing that discussions would not proceed without a Gaza ceasefire, al-Liwaa daily highlighted Hochstein’s appeal for sustaining peace in the South amid the anticipated Gaza truce and beyond, regardless of the conflict’s status in the Palestinian territory.
