Kiss of the Spider Woman: Jennifer Lopez and Diego Luna Star in New Musical Thriller

Jennifer Lopez is returning to the screen in a dynamic new role that blends music and political drama. The internationally known performer, celebrated for both her chart-topping music and acting career, will lead the cast in Kiss of the Spider Woman, a musical thriller based on the acclaimed stage production. The film recently unveiled its teaser trailer, revealing a glimpse into the narrative, performances, and musical direction.

In the upcoming feature, Lopez portrays Aurora, a haunting figure of fantasy who inhabits the imagination of a political prisoner incarcerated in a South American facility. The character weaves through dreamlike scenes that shift from one prisoner to another—specifically, a Marxist revolutionary and a gay window dresser, both imprisoned under harsh conditions. Through this surreal storytelling approach, the film explores themes of escape, memory, and repression.

One of the trailer’s highlights features Lopez performing Where You Are, a well-known number from the original musical. The film includes 13 musical tracks, performed by Lopez along with co-stars Tonatiuh and Luna. Following the trailer’s release, viewers responded with enthusiasm across social media platforms, offering praise for the visuals and Lopez’s screen presence. Many commented on her appearance, vocal delivery, and excitement for her return to musicals.

Story origins, cast, and theatrical release timeline

Kiss of the Spider Woman is adapted from the Broadway musical written by Terrence McNally, with music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb. The story itself traces back to the 1976 novel of the same name by Argentine author Manuel Puig. This adaptation marks the second film version, following the 1985 Brazilian production that earned critical acclaim.

The narrative centers around two cellmates, Molina and Valentin, who develop a deep emotional bond while confined in an Argentine prison. Their conversations shift between reality and fantasy, with Molina recounting films he’s seen, especially those starring the alluring Spider Woman—a symbolic figure representing seduction, escape, and fatal attraction. As their relationship deepens, themes of identity, political ideology, and vulnerability come to the forefront. The metaphor of the spider woman, a character who lures and entraps, serves as a layered commentary on human connection in times of extreme isolation.

The film stars Tonatiuh Elizarraraz, Tony Dovolani, Josefina Scaglione, and Bruno Bichir, in addition to Lopez. The world premiere took place at the Sundance Film Festival on January 26, 2025, where it attracted attention for its artistic direction and performances. Theatrical release in the United States is set for October 10, 2025, distributed by Lionsgate, Roadside Attractions, and LD Entertainment.
