Norovirus Spreading Across US States: CDC Data Reveals

A stomach virus known as norovirus is currently spreading throughout the northeastern United States, according to recent reports from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The latest figures indicate that the percentage of positive norovirus tests in this area has hit 13.9 percent over the last three weeks, as noted by The Hill.

The CDC has warned that people can be infected with norovirus multiple times in their life due to the variety of strains present. Immunity to one strain does not guarantee protection against others.

The CDC’s statistics show that norovirus causes between 19 and 21 million cases of illness annually in the U.S., particularly from November to April. Each year, the virus leads to around 109,000 hospitalizations and 900 deaths, predominantly affecting the elderly.

The World Health Organization (WHO) identifies norovirus as a leading cause of severe gastroenteritis globally, characterized by sudden vomiting and diarrhea.

This highly infectious virus spreads through contact with contaminated food, water, or surfaces. Symptoms often include vomiting, diarrhea, headaches, and body aches.

While norovirus generally causes mild illness in healthy individuals, it can lead to severe stomach problems in young children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing health conditions.

Common symptoms of a norovirus infection encompass:

– Stomach pain
– Mild fever

– Muscle aches and fatigue

Symptoms typically emerge 12 to 48 hours after exposure and can last from one to three days. It’s crucial to stay hydrated and rest during this time, seeking medical help if symptoms do not improve or become severe.

How to Prevent Norovirus:
To reduce the risk of contracting norovirus, follow these preventative measures:

1. Maintain good hand hygiene by washing with soap and water frequently, especially after using the bathroom, handling diapers, and before cooking or eating. Use hand sanitizer with at least 60 percent alcohol when soap and water aren’t available.

2. Ensure food safety by washing fruits and vegetables, cooking seafood thoroughly, and avoiding food preparation for others when sick.

3. Stay home if you’re experiencing norovirus symptoms like vomiting and diarrhea to avoid spreading the virus. Only return to work or school at least 48 hours after symptoms have ceased.

4. Clean and disinfect areas immediately if there’s an incident of vomiting or diarrhea, using gloves and appropriate cleaning agents, and wash hands thoroughly afterward.
