Early on Wednesday, Ahmed Abdullah Abu Shalal, identified by the Israeli military as a key figure in planning multiple assaults against Israelis in Jerusalem, was killed in a strike at the densely populated Balata refugee camp in Nablus, along with four others.
According to the Palestinian Red Crescent, Israeli forces hindered medical personnel from accessing the strike location, asserting through a social media statement that their teams were subjected to gunfire.
The Israeli military claimed that Abu Shalal and his group were preparing for an imminent attack and had been receiving financial support and instructions from Iranian entities. However, no evidence was provided to support this claim.
Recent months have seen a spike in violence in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, coinciding with the onset of the conflict in Gaza. The Palestinian Health Ministry reports that over 350 Palestinians have lost their lives in the past three months, predominantly in incidents related to Israeli apprehension operations and turbulent demonstrations.
As the conflict intensifies, Israel’s use of airstrikes in the West Bank has escalated, although targeted assassinations remain uncommon in the region.
