American Coal Miners Unearth Ancient Mammoth Tusk Hidden for Millennia

“At the Freedom Mine in North Dakota, an unexpected discovery took place when a shovel operator unearthed a mammoth tusk measuring two meters in length. This remarkable find was located in an old streambed estimated to be between 10,000 to 100,000 years old, a rarity considering the mine primarily produces lignite coal.

Despite the heavy machinery used in the mine, the mammoth tusk was remarkably well-preserved, and subsequent excavations uncovered more than 20 bones. This discovery is potentially one of the most complete mammoths ever found in North Dakota, shedding light on the history of these giant creatures that once roamed the Earth.

Mammoths, larger than today’s elephants, offer valuable insights into prehistoric life. While this find contains fewer bones than a complete skeleton, it remains significant. The mammoth tusk, weighing over 22.6 kilograms, is fragile and has been carefully wrapped in plastic for controlled dehydration. The bones will remain protected for several months, and the mining company intends to donate these remains for educational purposes.
