Israel Says It Killed Hezbollah Commander in South Lebanon

On Saturday, an Israeli drone strike targeted a vehicle in southern Lebanon’s Tyre district, resulting in the death of a Hezbollah commander. The incident occurred in Abu al-Aswad, approximately 30 kilometers from the Israeli border. Lebanon’s health ministry confirmed one fatality from the strike. Visual evidence from the scene showed the vehicle’s charred remains, indicating a direct hit.

The Israeli military stated that the targeted individual was involved in efforts to rebuild Hezbollah’s military infrastructure in southern Lebanon. This operation marks the fourth Israeli strike in the region within a week, despite a ceasefire agreement established in November 2024.

Ceasefire Agreement and Ongoing Tensions

The ceasefire, brokered on November 27, 2024, required Hezbollah to withdraw its forces north of the Litani River and dismantle military installations in the south. In return, Israel agreed to withdraw its troops from southern Lebanon. However, Israel has maintained a presence in five strategic locations, citing security concerns. The Lebanese Army, alongside UN peacekeepers, has been deploying in the area to oversee the dismantling of Hezbollah’s infrastructure and ensure compliance with the ceasefire terms.

Despite the agreement, both parties have accused each other of violations. Israel asserts that Hezbollah’s continued military activities in the south breach the ceasefire, while Lebanon points to Israeli strikes as violations. The situation remains volatile, with the potential for further escalations if the terms of the ceasefire are not upheld by both sides.
