The first trailer for Thug Life, a much-anticipated gangster drama, has officially been released, marking the return of actor Kamal Haasan and filmmaker Mani Ratnam as collaborators after nearly forty years. In this film, Haasan takes on the role of Rangaraaya Sakthivel Naicker, a formidable gangster thought to be dead whose unexpected return sets him on a path of conflict with his own son.
The two-minute trailer offers a glimpse into the film’s central narrative without revealing too much beyond the premise. It showcases the evolution of Naicker’s character, highlighting his rise in the criminal underworld, the emotional foundation of his relationship with his son, and the events that ultimately lead to betrayal and confrontation between the two.
Thug Life brings together a high-profile ensemble cast that includes Silambarasan STR, Trisha Krishnan, Sanya Malhotra, Pankaj Tripathi, and Ali Fazal. The screenplay has been collaboratively crafted by Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan. Accompanying the narrative is a musical score by A. R. Rahman, a two-time Academy Award winner, who adds further cinematic depth to the production.
The film’s visual presentation is guided by cinematographer Ravi K. Chandran, with editing overseen by National Award-winning editor A. Sreekar Prasad. The extensive supporting cast features performances from Aishwarya Lekshmi, Ashok Selvan, Joju George, Nassar, Mahesh Manjrekar, and Tanikella Bharani, contributing to a richly layered storyline.
This project signifies the first collaboration between Haasan and Ratnam since their work on the 1987 classic Nayakan, which earned three National Film Awards, including Best Actor for Haasan. That earlier film has since been recognized as a landmark in Indian cinema, and Thug Life seeks to build on that legacy.
Thug Life is scheduled for a wide theatrical release on June 5, 2025. It will be available in all major Indian languages and is expected to have a global release, positioning it as a major cinematic event of the year.
