US Pressures Israel to Pull Out of Lebanon and Honor Ceasefire

The United States is intensifying diplomatic efforts to ensure Israel’s complete withdrawal from five remaining positions in southern Lebanon, as stipulated in the November 2024 ceasefire agreement. This initiative aims to facilitate the Lebanese Army’s full deployment in the region and advance discussions on consolidating all weaponry under state control.

According to informed sources, U.S. Deputy Special Envoy Morgan Ortagus is actively working to finalize the withdrawal agreement. Her return to Beirut is anticipated following Lebanon’s municipal elections, with the objective of initiating negotiations between Lebanon and Israel concerning the demarcation of their land border.

The ceasefire agreement, brokered by the United States and France, mandated a 60-day period for Israel to withdraw its forces from southern Lebanon and for Hezbollah to reposition north of the Litani River. While Israel has vacated most areas, it maintains a presence in five strategic locations, citing security concerns and the need to ensure the Lebanese Army’s readiness to assume control.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has expressed a commitment to extending state authority throughout the south and addressing the issue of non-state armed groups. Discussions with Hezbollah are ongoing, focusing on integrating its military capabilities into the national framework. Hezbollah has indicated a willingness to engage in dialogue, contingent upon Israel’s full compliance with the withdrawal terms and cessation of airstrikes in Lebanon.

The Lebanese Army has increased its deployment in the southern region, working to dismantle unauthorized military positions and confiscate illicit arms. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to reinforce national sovereignty and comply with United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701, which calls for the disarmament of all armed groups in Lebanon and the establishment of state authority over the entire territory.

The United States continues to play a pivotal role in mediating between Lebanon and Israel, aiming to resolve outstanding border disputes and support Lebanon’s efforts to stabilize the region. The forthcoming negotiations are expected to address the remaining points of contention along the Blue Line and facilitate a comprehensive resolution to the longstanding border issues.
