Breaking: Car Plows Into Vancouver Festival Crowd, Nine Dead

A 30-year-old local man drove a black SUV into a crowd of festival-goers around 8:14 p.m., resulting in the deaths of nine individuals and injuring several others. The suspect, known to law enforcement, was apprehended at the scene by bystanders and subsequently taken into custody by police. The Lapu Lapu Day festival, celebrating the legacy of 16th-century Filipino hero Datu Lapu-Lapu, is a significant cultural event for Vancouver’s Filipino community, which comprises approximately 5.9% of the city’s population. In the aftermath of the tragedy, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, British Columbia Premier David Eby, and Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim expressed their condolences and support for the victims and the broader community.

Emergency services responded promptly, and local hospitals activated emergency protocols to treat the injured. The Vancouver Police Department’s Major Crime Section is leading the ongoing investigation into the incident.
