Southampton’s return to the Premier League after a brief stint in the Championship has been a tough one. Currently sitting at the bottom of the table with only 6 points from 19 matches, the Saints have struggled to find form. Recent losses have been heavy, including defeats to Chelsea (1-5), Aston Villa (1-0), and Tottenham (0-5). Although they managed a 0-0 draw against Fulham after Ivan Juric took over as manager, they then lost to West Ham (0-1) on Boxing Day and Crystal Palace (2-1) last weekend.
In contrast, Brentford is in 12th place in the league. After losing 2-1 to Chelsea and 3-1 to Newcastle in the League Cup, they suffered their first home loss of the season against Nottingham Forest (0-2). However, they managed a positive 0-0 draw against Brighton.
Southampton’s injury list continues to grow, with goalkeeper Bazunu, midfielder Smallbone, and striker Stewart all sidelined. Former Lyon player Maxwell Cornet has also been left out of the manager’s plans. Defender Jack Stephens is doubtful for the match after missing the last game.
Southampton’s offensive struggles persist, having scored only 11 goals in the Premier League this season, the lowest in the league. No player has scored more than two goals, but 18-year-old Tyler Dibling, who has netted two goals, offers some hope for the future.
Prediction
Southampton has been involved in many low-scoring matches recently, with 16 of their last 19 Premier League games seeing fewer than three goals. Similarly, six of Brentford’s last eight matches have followed this trend, making it unlikely that this match will feature more than 3.5 goals.
Prediction: Southampton 0 – 2 Brentford.
