Iga Swiatek achieved her second successive year-end No. 1 ranking in the WTA, earning her the Player of the Year award for the second consecutive time on Monday. This accomplishment marks her as the first female player to do so since Serena Williams, who retired last year and was the WTA Player of the Year from 2012-2015, part of her seven total wins of the award.
In 2023, Swiatek’s impressive 68-11 record included leading the tour with six titles, notably winning the French Open in June. This victory marked her third win at Roland Garros and her fourth Grand Slam title overall.
The 22-year-old Polish player concluded the season triumphantly at the WTA Finals in Cancun, Mexico, last month. Her undefeated performance there helped her reclaim the top spot in the rankings from Aryna Sabalenka, having previously held it from April 2022 until September before regaining it to end the year.
The WTA also announced other awards on Monday. Zheng Qinwen of China was named Most Improved Player of the Year, Mirra Andreeva of Russia received Newcomer of the Year, and Elina Svitolina of Ukraine was honored with the Comeback of the Year award. Tomasz Wiktorowski, Swiatek’s coach, was recognized as Coach of the Year.
In doubles, Storm Hunter of Australia and Elise Mertens of Belgium were awarded the Doubles Team of the Year. Ons Jabeur of Tunisia won both the Karen Krantzcke Sportsmanship Award and the Peachy Kellmeyer Player Service Award. Jessica Pegula of the U.S. was acknowledged with the Jerry Diamond ACES Award for her contributions to off-court promotional and charitable activities.
