Portugal’s iconic striker, Cristiano Ronaldo, reached another remarkable milestone on Thursday, September 5th, by netting his 900th career goal in a 2-1 victory over Croatia. While the match was highlighted by this impressive achievement, Ronaldo also reflected on his career, comparing his Euro 2016 win to the significance of a FIFA World Cup victory. Despite never having won the World Cup, Ronaldo drew parallels between his Euro triumph and football’s most prestigious tournament—a comparison that invites a natural contrast with his Argentine rival, Lionel Messi, who has won both the World Cup and Copa America.

 

Ronaldo’s Remark on His Accomplishment

“I don’t need to win the World Cup. Winning the Euro with my country is like winning the World Cup. I’ve already secured two titles with the national team,” Ronaldo stated after scoring his historic 900th goal.

The 38-year-old veteran struck his milestone goal during Portugal’s Nations League opener, making it the second of the night in their win over Croatia. Playing now in the Saudi Pro League (SPL), Ronaldo has yet to capture the World Cup title, with his closest attempt being the semifinals in 2006.

Reflecting on the 900-goal feat, Ronaldo added, “Scoring 900 goals may seem like just another number, but I know how much work goes into achieving it day in and day out.

“It’s a unique milestone in my career.”

In contrast, Messi has twice lifted the Copa America and claimed runner-up status in the tournament twice as well. His crowning achievement came in 2022, when he led Argentina to World Cup victory in Qatar, adding to his runner-up finish in the 2014 World Cup.

Though Messi has completed his collection of major football titles, Ronaldo still has the chance to add a World Cup to his trophy case if he continues playing until the 2026 tournament.
