In the concert film ‘Renaissance,’ Beyoncé provides a personal look into her life during her global tour

Beyoncé’s recent “Renaissance World Tour,” meticulously overseen by her from lighting to set design, was a product of four years of preparation. Her hands-on approach to production, aiming for perfection, is evident in her concert film, “Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé.” This film, which she wrote, directed, and produced, not only showcases her vibrant performances but also offers rare behind-the-scenes insights into her usually private life.

The film, nearly three hours long, was released in AMC Theaters, following a trend set by Taylor Swift’s concert film. However, Beyoncé’s film diverges by providing more personal insights. She shares her excitement about revealing the process, showing a more relatable side akin to her 2019 Netflix documentary “Homecoming.”

“Renaissance” delves into Beyoncé’s challenges in balancing her career and motherhood, along with maintaining her mental and physical health during the tour. She discusses facing obstacles, partly due to being a Black woman, and recovering from knee surgery just before the tour. Despite these struggles, she, the most awarded Grammy artist, consistently delivered top-notch performances.

The film features guest performances by artists like Megan Thee Stallion and Kendrick Lamar, and a touching birthday tribute by Diana Ross. However, it was Beyoncé’s daughter, Blue Ivy, who emerged as a standout, overcoming initial reluctance and social media criticism to evolve into a confident performer.

Beyoncé also revisits her roots, touring her childhood neighborhood in Houston with her mother, Tina Knowles, and reuniting with all Destiny’s Child members. The film captures a moment of collective healing and reconciliation among the group.

The film pays homage to Beyoncé’s late uncle Johnny, who influenced her love for house music and to whom she dedicated her “Renaissance” album. It also appreciates her devoted BeyHive fanbase, showcasing them in various concert locations.

While not every tour song features in the film, hits like “Alien Superstar,” “Church Girl,” and “Cuff It” are included. Ultimately, “Renaissance” offers a unique glimpse into Beyoncé’s life, highlighting her journey beyond just her music.
