The much-anticipated title of the third installment in the Avatar film series was unveiled at the D23 expo. Director James Cameron, alongside actors Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthington, announced the film would be called “Avatar: Fire and Ash.”
Although no film footage was presented, Cameron shared concept art featuring Neytiri, played by Zoe Saldana, dancing amidst flames and soaring on banshees. Cameron promised a visually stunning and emotionally intense adventure, saying, “You’ll see a lot more of Pandora than you ever have before. It’s an insane adventure and a feast for the eyes, but it’s also got very high emotional stakes, more than ever before. We’re going into really challenging territory for all the characters you know and love.”
“Avatar: Fire and Ash” was filmed concurrently with its predecessor, “Avatar: The Way of Water,” which was released in 2022. The storyline continues from the previous film, which depicted the ongoing conflict between humans and the Na’vi following the return of the exploitative Resources Development Administration (RDA) to Pandora. At the conclusion of “The Way of Water,” Jake Sully (played by Sam Worthington) and Neytiri’s family successfully fend off an RDA attack, although they suffer a significant loss with the death of their eldest son. Despite their victory, the RDA’s presence on Pandora remains strong.
The new film, “Fire and Ash,” picks up shortly after these events, introducing the Ash People, a Na’vi clan with a disposition towards violence and power, adding a new layer of complexity and challenge for Jake and Neytiri.
Set for release on December 19, 2025, “Avatar: Fire and Ash” follows the record-breaking success of the original 2009 “Avatar” film and its sequel. The series is produced by Cameron and his longtime collaborator Jon Landau, who passed away from cancer at the age of 63 in July.
