Paris 2024: Athletes Served Worm-Infested Food, Conditions ‘Not Good,’ Says UK Swimmer

The Paris 2024 Olympics has faced criticism once again, this time from British swimmer Adam Peaty, who alleged that the food served to athletes contained worms and that the conditions in the Olympic Village were substandard.

The 29-year-old swimmer, who won a silver medal in the 100m breaststroke, voiced his concerns in an interview with iNews. Peaty criticized the organizers for their commitment to providing 60 percent meat-free meals in an effort to make the Games more sustainable, arguing that this policy was detrimental to athletes.

“I need meat to perform, it’s part of my regular diet. Why should I change that here?” Peaty questioned. He expressed his dissatisfaction, noting that some athletes found worms in their fish, which he deemed unacceptable. “We are competing at the highest level, and we are not being provided with the best food,” he added.

Peaty, who also contracted Covid-19 during the Games, mentioned that athletes were “blindsided” by the challenges they faced in the Olympic Village. He highlighted issues with the catering, stating that the food quality was not up to par with the performance expectations placed on the athletes. He compared it unfavorably to the food at the Tokyo and Rio Olympics, noting a lack of protein options and long wait times for food due to poor queuing systems.

Responding to these allegations, a spokesperson for the Paris 2024 Olympics stated, “We are taking the athletes’ feedback seriously. Since the village opened, our partner Sodexo Live! has been working to adjust supplies according to the increased demand and consumption patterns observed in the first few days.”

The spokesperson added, “As a result, we have increased the quantities of certain products and deployed additional staff to ensure smooth service.”
