Bundesliga club Bayern Munich has named Vincent Kompany as their new manager, succeeding Thomas Tuchel, who departed at the season’s end.
Kompany makes the move from English Premier League (EPL) club Burnley, which will receive a compensation fee of around $13 million for his transfer. During his two seasons at Burnley, Kompany led the team to the Championship title in 2023.
Burnley released a statement confirming Kompany’s departure: “We can confirm that Burnley Football Club has reached an agreement allowing Vincent Kompany to leave Turf Moor.”
“While we were initially confident in retaining our manager, changing circumstances made this impossible. We acknowledge the allure and prestige of a club like Bayern Munich and respect Vincent’s desire to pursue new opportunities.”
“We wish Vincent all the best and express our gratitude for his dedication during his time at this club. Our priority remains the stability and success of Burnley FC, and we will continue to take the necessary steps to achieve our ambition of returning to the Premier League.”
“We have begun the search for a new manager and will make an announcement in due course.”
Initially, Kompany was not Bayern’s first choice. The club approached several other candidates, including Bayer Leverkusen’s head coach Xabi Alonso, Germany’s national team coach Julian Nagelsmann, and Austria’s coach Ralf Rangnick, all of whom declined the position.
Kompany takes over a team that experienced its first trophy-less season in 12 years. As a player, Kompany is a four-time Premier League champion with Manchester City.
