Novak Djokovic moved closer to ending his 2024 title drought by defeating Dutch player Tallon Griekspoor 7-5, 6-1 on Thursday, securing a spot in the Geneva Open semi-finals. The world number one, who accepted a late wildcard to participate in the ATP 250 tournament before defending his French Open title, faced a challenging moment in the 10th game. Down 0-40, Djokovic saved four set points and broke Griekspoor to take a 6-5 lead, subsequently serving out the first set.
The 37-year-old Serbian maintained his momentum, breaking serve three times in the second set, which lasted only 25 minutes, ultimately overcoming the world number 27. “It was a great win. The first set could have easily gone his way as he played better for most of it,” said Djokovic, who has been stuck on 98 singles titles since winning last year’s ATP Finals.
“He had three set points at 5-4, and I was 0-40 down. The match could have taken a completely different direction if he had converted those set points. I was fortunate to find some excellent serves and played solid tennis from that point onwards. The second set was really good. I appreciate everyone’s support on this cold day.”
The 24-time Grand Slam champion will face Czech player Tomas Machac in the semi-finals on Friday.
