In the Sydney Test, Pakistan faced a challenging start, posting 313 runs in their first innings despite a tough beginning on Wednesday, trailing 0-2 in the series. The architect of Pakistan’s early struggles was Pat Cummins, who claimed five wickets in the first two sessions on the opening day. However, Mohammad Rizwan (88) and Aamer Jamal (82) staged a rescue mission, helping Pakistan recover despite Pat Cummins’ third five-wicket haul in as many innings. Australia finished the day at 6/0 after just one over was bowled.
Pakistan’s innings got off to a poor start when they chose to bat after winning the toss. Both openers, Abdullah Shafique and debutant Saim Ayub, were dismissed for ducks in the opening two overs, leaving Pakistan at 4/2. Babar Azam (26) and Shan Massod (35) attempted to stabilize the innings, but Mitchell Marsh and Pat Cummins were in control.
With Pakistan struggling at 47/4 and later at 96/5, Rizwan and Agha Salman (53) formed a crucial partnership of 94 runs for the sixth wicket. Although Cummins eventually dismissed Rizwan, Agha continued to hold one end. Agha received support from Jamal, and together they guided Pakistan past 300 on a batting-friendly SCG pitch. Sajid Khan (15), returning to the side for the first time since 2022, also contributed as Pakistan reached a total of 313 in 77.1 overs.
Cummins claimed the majority of the wickets with five, while Starc took two. Lyon, Hazlewood, and Marsh each took one wicket.
Australia came out to bat for one over to end the day, and David Warner received a warm reception from the fans. He scored a four before stumps were called on Day 1, with Australia reaching 6/0. All eyes will be on Warner on Thursday as he aims to achieve the unique feat of scoring a hundred in a farewell Test match.
