Suspect in Gadhafi’s abduction emerges

Suleiman Hilal Assad, a cousin of Syrian President Bashar Assad, has emerged as a suspect in last week’s kidnapping of late Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi’s son, Hannibal, who is currently in Internal Security Forces’ custody, sources told The Daily Star over the weekend. Hannibal Gadhafi’s arrest is considered vital in the Lebanese investigation in the disappearance case of Sadr. Sadr and his two companions Sheikh Mohammad Yaacoub and journalist Abbas Badreddine went missing on Aug. 31, 1978, during an official visit to Libya at the invitation of Moammar Gadhafi. Apart from the investigation that the security forces have kicked off to identify the Lebanese nationals involved in his kidnapping, Hannibal Gadhafi will be under judicial interrogation in Sadr’s case Monday. Judge Zaher Hamadeh requested the Information Branch to bring Hannibal Gadhafi to Beirut’s Justice Palace for questioning in the case.
