Alexander Zverev prepared for the French Open by claiming his sixth Masters title, defeating Nicolas Jarry 6-4, 7-5 in the Italian Open final on Sunday. This victory marks Zverev’s second title in Rome, the first being in 2017 when he was just 20. It also signifies his first trophy win since sustaining an ankle injury during the French Open semi-finals in 2022.
At 27 years old, Zverev’s triumph will propel him to fourth in the rankings as he steadily regains his top form ahead of Roland Garros. “Winning my first Masters title here in Rome and my first after my injury also in Rome makes this place very special to me. It’s been an incredibly special week,” said Zverev, the tournament’s third seed.
Nicolas Jarry, who had made it to the final after defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas and Tommy Paul, struggled to break through Zverev’s game, as the German won 95% of his first-serve points. Despite Jarry’s aggressive play and powerful serves, Zverev managed to absorb the pressure, maintaining a low number of unforced errors.
Jarry saved three match points before Zverev secured his victory in Rome, where he lost only one set throughout the tournament. “He is playing exceptionally well, and the level of players he has beaten here this week shows his incredible tennis,” Zverev said of Jarry. “I told him that if he continues to play like this, he will have many opportunities at this level. Today, I am extremely happy to be the winner.”
