A Western diplomat, whose country is engaged in diplomatic efforts to prevent a significant escalation in the conflict between Hezbollah and Israel, anticipates that Israel will keep its retaliation limited to avoid a full-scale war. This approach mirrors the exchange of strikes between Iran and Israel earlier this year after Israel targeted an Iranian consular building in Syria.
“It’s evident that they (Israel) aim to make a statement without sparking a widespread conflict,” the diplomat stated. “Retaliation is inevitable. It might be symbolic and possibly dramatic, but it won’t push both sides into a broader escalation.” The diplomat spoke anonymously as they were not authorized to speak publicly.
Israel is currently considering its response following a rocket attack over the weekend in the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights, which resulted in the deaths of 12 children and teenagers. Israel has accused Hezbollah of the attack, although Hezbollah has unusually denied any involvement.
