Van Dijk Confirms Talks for Contract Extension

Virgil van Dijk has confirmed he is in “discussions with the right people” regarding his future at Liverpool, as his contract enters its final months. The Liverpool captain, along with key players Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold, is among several whose contracts expire at the end of the season, sparking uncertainty over their futures.

As it stands, the trio will be eligible to negotiate pre-contract terms with foreign clubs starting in January. However, Van Dijk revealed he is in talks to extend his time at Anfield.

“I have no idea what the future holds at the moment… but discussions are ongoing with the right people,” Van Dijk said. “When the time comes to make a decision, you’ll all know about it. Right now, my full focus and commitment are on Liverpool and being successful this season. We’ll see how things go.”

Since joining Liverpool in 2018, Van Dijk has remained a crucial part of the team’s defense, even at the age of 33. This season, Liverpool has managed five clean sheets in eight Premier League matches, with Van Dijk playing a key role.

Sunday’s 2-1 victory over Chelsea saw Liverpool return to the top of the Premier League, following Manchester City’s earlier win over Wolves. With seven wins out of eight league games, new manager Arne Slot has made a strong start to his tenure at Anfield.

Before the season began, City and Arsenal were widely regarded as the favorites for the title. However, early results suggest Liverpool will also be serious contenders.

“Everyone can have their opinion, but we know how quickly things can change in football,” Van Dijk said. “People will say one team can win the league today, and change their minds in a few days. I don’t pay attention to that.

“I focus on one game at a time. I want to win trophies in every competition we’re in, and I know how hard it is, but I’m going to give it everything I’ve got.”
