U.S. Senators Chris Coons and Richard Blumenthal, both Democrats, emphasized that Israel is serious about launching an offensive against Hezbollah, but noted that achieving a truce in Gaza could lead to de-escalation in Lebanon. During their visit to Beirut, where they met with Lebanese officials including Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, they discussed the potential for a ceasefire in Gaza to positively impact the situation in Lebanon. The senators highlighted the critical nature of the upcoming weeks for the region, suggesting that a truce could provide a crucial opportunity for peace efforts, especially with the possibility of overlapping with Ramadan, a period that could foster a conducive environment for further diplomatic endeavors aimed at fully implementing UN Security Council Resolution 1701.
In their conversation with Speaker Berri, Coons and Blumenthal conveyed the seriousness of Israel’s stance regarding a possible offensive against Hezbollah, underscoring that Israel’s threats were more than mere rhetoric and that action could be imminent. They hoped their message would be relayed to Hezbollah, considering the ongoing tension and near-daily cross-border exchanges since October 8, which have resulted in significant casualties on both sides, including Hezbollah fighters and civilians in Lebanon, as well as soldiers and civilians in Israel.
