David Hale, the former U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon, has recently urged for the activation of U.N. Resolution 1701 and a strategic shift in dealing with Iran and its allies in the region following the conclusion of the Gaza conflict.
The ongoing Gaza war has sparked frequent skirmishes between Hezbollah and Israeli forces along the Lebanon-Israel border, raising concerns about the possibility of a larger-scale conflict.
In Lebanon, the conflict has resulted in over 140 fatalities, predominantly among Hezbollah militants, but also including more than ten civilians, three of whom were journalists, as reported by AFP. This toll includes a recent fatality announced on Thursday.
On the Israeli front, the conflict has claimed the lives of four civilians and seven military personnel, as confirmed by official sources.
In a conversation with MTV, Hale emphasized that implementing Resolution 1701 would significantly increase the Lebanese army’s responsibilities. He highlighted the importance of stability in the army’s leadership during such turbulent times, particularly given the risk of heightened tensions in Lebanon. Hale commended the decision to extend the tenure of Army Chief General Joseph Aoun, considering the ongoing regional conflict and the potential for escalation in Lebanon.
