U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced that the United States will deliver almost $157 million in additional humanitarian aid to support communities affected by conflict in Lebanon and the surrounding region. Blinken detailed that this assistance would benefit internally displaced persons and refugees within Lebanon, as well as those escaping to neighboring Syria.
He explained that the American people are providing this vital support, which includes approximately $82 million managed by the Department of State’s Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration and another $75 million through the United States Agency for International Development’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance.
USAID has already allocated $11.5 million and is coordinating with Congress to release an additional $63.5 million soon to ensure ongoing support to the most vulnerable groups.
This aid, comprising emergency food supplies, shelter, blankets, hygiene products, as well as water and sanitation services, aims to provide essential relief to those facing severe hardships, Blinken remarked.
Over the past year, the U.S. has contributed nearly $386 million to assist those in Lebanon and Syria affected by escalating conflicts.
Blinken highlighted the dire humanitarian crisis in Lebanon, which has displaced over a million people, and reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to supporting the region’s most vulnerable. He also called on other donors to increase their contributions to meet the growing humanitarian needs.
