UN chief urges end to Gaza war at crossing

During a visit near Gaza, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for a cease-fire to allow more humanitarian aid into the war-torn region, emphasizing the global community’s horror at the conflict’s devastation. This appeal came as Israeli forces continued a raid on Gaza’s largest hospital, with Hamas reporting 19 fatalities at an aid distribution point due to alleged Israeli artillery. Israel has denied targeting civilians.

The ongoing conflict, sparked by a Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, has led to severe humanitarian crises in Gaza. Guterres highlighted the collective punishment of Palestinians, urging Israel to ensure complete humanitarian access throughout Gaza. The Israeli Foreign Minister criticized the U.N.’s stance, attributing aid shortages to Hamas’s actions.

The Israeli military’s operation around the Al-Shifa hospital has been intensive, claiming the lives of numerous militants while avoiding civilian casualties, according to Israeli officials. However, the U.N. has reported detentions among health workers.

International pressure on Israel to halt its military actions grows as the Gaza Health Ministry reports over 32,000 deaths, predominantly women and children. Meanwhile, the conflict has also resulted in significant Israeli casualties, with around 1,160 deaths, mostly civilians, and numerous hostages taken by Hamas.

Mediation efforts for a cease-fire have been unsuccessful, with deep divisions between the parties. Israeli officials remain committed to a potential operation in Rafah, despite international concerns over civilian casualties.

The crisis has left large parts of Gaza in ruins, with the World Food Programme warning of imminent famine. The U.S. has voiced concerns over the war’s impact on civilians, with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant set to discuss developments and humanitarian efforts in Washington with U.S. officials.
