The UK’s leading diplomat has proposed a strategy to reduce the rising tensions along the Lebanon-Israel border, where exchanges of fire between Hezbollah and Israeli forces have been a regular occurrence for the past four months, raising concerns about a potential broader conflict.
This proposal involves the British military providing training to Lebanese army forces to enhance their security capabilities in the border area. Foreign Secretary David Cameron, in an interview with An-Nahar newspaper during his visit to Lebanon aimed at de-escalating regional tensions, emphasized the importance of implementing U.N. Resolution 1701. This includes moving Hezbollah forces north of the Litani River, accurately demarcating the land border, and enhancing the Lebanese army’s role in maintaining border security.
Cameron expressed optimism about the likelihood of reaching diplomatic solutions to these issues. According to the pro-Hezbollah publication al-Akhbar, the British plan also involves setting up surveillance towers equipped with advanced monitoring and tracking technology on both sides of the border. These installations would operate under the supervision of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) to ensure compliance with Resolution 1701 and prevent any breaches.
