Tuchel Exiting Bayern Munich; Alonso, Klopp Eyed as Successors

Bayern Munich announced on Wednesday, February 21, that they will part ways with coach Thomas Tuchel at the conclusion of the current season, despite his contract running until 2025. Tuchel’s tenure at Bayern has seen the team struggle, with recent losses in their last three matches across all competitions contributing to their downturn.

The club finds itself trailing behind Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen after dropping eight points. Their difficulties were compounded by a 1-0 defeat to Lazio in the Champions League Round of 16 first leg last week.

Tuchel, who previously managed Chelsea, took the helm at Bayern in March of the previous year, succeeding Julian Nagelsmann. Despite high hopes, the team has underperformed this season, leading to speculation regarding Tuchel’s future. Even with Harry Kane’s impressive goal tally, the team has lacked cohesion.

The decision for Tuchel to leave in the summer was reached following discussions with Bayern’s CEO, Jan-Christian Dreesen.

Tuchel commented, “We have mutually agreed to conclude our collaboration at season’s end. I, along with my coaching staff, will continue to give our all to secure the best possible outcomes until then.”

Dreesen explained, “After a candid and constructive conversation, we decided to mutually end our collaboration this summer. We aim to chart a new course in football under a new head coach for the 2024-25 season. We call on everyone at the club to strive for the best possible results in the Champions League and Bundesliga until then. We hold the team particularly accountable, especially in the Champions League, where, despite a 1-0 deficit in the first leg against Lazio, we are optimistic about advancing to the quarter-finals with the support of our fans at the Allianz Arena.” The return leg is scheduled for Tuesday, March 5.

According to Goal.com, several prominent figures, including Xabi Alonso and Jurgen Klopp, who will soon depart from Liverpool, are being considered to fill the upcoming vacancy left by Tuchel.
