Toyota is recalling 145,000 Lexus TX and Toyota Grand Highlander SUVs due to a potential issue that could prevent the driver’s side curtain airbag from deploying properly in certain situations.
According to a statement released by Toyota on Thursday, the curtain airbag on the driver’s side might not deploy correctly during specific crashes if the driver’s side window is rolled down. Toyota did not specify the exact conditions under which this problem might occur.
In the event of a crash or vehicle rollover, side curtain airbags deploy to cover the side window opening, helping to prevent occupants from hitting the window glass or parts of the door. During a rollover, these airbags can also protect occupants by preventing their arm, shoulder, or head from striking the ground or by stopping them from being ejected from the vehicle.
The Lexus TX and Toyota Grand Highlander, which share many similarities, are new models that were launched last year. Both are large crossover SUVs with three rows of seating and are manufactured at Toyota’s plant in Princeton, Indiana.
Toyota is currently working on a solution to this issue. The automaker stated that owners would be notified of the recall by mid-August.
