Taiwan’s Pro-Independence Candidate Triumphs: US Applauds Election

Retired U.S. officials met with Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen, expressing admiration for the island’s democratic process and affirming their commitment to Taiwan, despite China’s claims of sovereignty over Taiwan.

Former national security advisor Stephen Hadley praised Taiwan’s democracy as a global success story based on transparency, the rule of law, and respect for human rights and freedoms. He emphasized that America’s commitment to Taiwan is unwavering.

Former Deputy Secretary of State James B. Steinberg reaffirmed bipartisan support for Taiwan, emphasizing peaceful means to address cross-strait issues, dialogue, and the avoidance of unilateral efforts to change the status quo.

Taiwan recently elected Vice President Lai Ching-te as the new head of government, a move that may prompt continued Chinese military, diplomatic, and economic threats.

President Tsai emphasized the value of democracy and freedom to the Taiwanese people and their partnership with the United States in maintaining stability in the Taiwan Strait.

Despite the lack of official diplomatic relations since 1979, the U.S. remains Taiwan’s primary diplomatic ally and a source of military support.

The Taiwan Strait division between democratic Taiwan and authoritarian China is a major point of contention in U.S.-China relations and a potential flashpoint for future conflicts.

Lai’s victory, which supports the status quo of de-facto independence for Taiwan, was seen as a setback for China’s reunification efforts.

China has refused to acknowledge the election’s result, claiming Taiwan as its internal affair.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken congratulated Lai on his victory, leading to criticism from China, which considers it support for Taiwan independence.

Lai’s victory means the Democratic Progressive Party will continue its presidency for a third term, with his inauguration scheduled for May.
