Sparta Prague has certainly earned their spot in the upcoming Champions League. The Czech champions began their qualifying campaign on July 23, defeating Shamrock Rovers 0-2 and 4-2 in the second round.
They then overcame Steaua Bucharest 1-1 and 2-3 in a tough battle between two prominent clubs, before securing a convincing victory in the playoff round against Malmö FF, winning 2-0 and 0-2. In their domestic league, Sparta Prague is performing well, currently sitting at the top of the table, and they are set to face Karvina in their next match.
On the other side, RB Salzburg, who finished second in their league last season, had to go through the qualifying rounds to secure their place in the Champions League. Their path wasn’t easy, as they faced a challenge from Dutch side Twente in the third round, narrowly winning 2-1 and drawing 3-3.
However, they performed more convincingly in the playoff round, defeating Dynamo Kyiv 2-0 and drawing 1-1, with a strong first-leg performance. With a game in hand, Salzburg has a chance to return to the top of their domestic league, and they are preparing for a key match against Austria Klagenfurt.
Regarding transfers, Sparta Prague saw last season’s top scorer Jan Kuchta leave for Midtjylland for €3 million, while central defender Ladislav Krejci moved to Girona for €8 million. Sparta brought in new talents, including Krasniqi from FC Rapid 1923, Vindahl from AZ Alkmaar, and Veljko Birmancevic from TFC, who has already scored three goals in the league. Right midfielder Préciado, who missed the last league match, is expected to return after playing for Ecuador during the international break.
As for RB Salzburg, they maintained their strategy of making notable departures and acquiring young talent for around €10 million, with the potential for future profit. Key arrivals include Bobby Clark from Liverpool for €12 million and Joane Gadou from PSG for €10 million.
These signings help fill the gaps left by the departures of Pavlovic to AC Milan and Susic to Real Sociedad. Several players, including Guindo, Morgalla, Kawamura, and long-term injured Konaté, are unavailable, while Solet, Gadou, and Fernando are ineligible for the Champions League until January 2025. Kjaergaard has recently returned to the squad.
Prediction
Sparta Prague has been incredibly consistent, with 19 consecutive home games in the Champions League featuring over 2.5 goals. Likewise, Salzburg has seen the deadlock broken in 17 of their last 19 second-tier fixtures. Therefore, a goalless draw seems unlikely.
Prediction: Sparta Prague 2:2 Salzburg.
